Microsoft just introduced a new version of Windows 10 Today, Windows 10 S which is essentially the Microsoft’s answer to Chrome OS. It’s meant to be cheaper and less processor intensive than Windows 10 Home or Pro. “Windows 10 S is all about security”, says Microsoft
“Everything that runs on Windows 10 S is downloaded from the Windows Store”, says Microsoft’s Windows Chief Terry Myerson. But if you like to run other desktop apps that are not available on the Windows Store, you can any time switch to Windows 10 Pro for a fee of $49.
Microsoft also improved the login speeds on Windows 10 S. When a student login on the computer for the first time, it is ready for use in less than 15 seconds, that is much faster than Windows 10 Pro says Microsoft. Other improvements include the ability to set up machines with pre-configured USB drive. Windows 10 S will simply detect the USB and configure the machine for you. Microsoft is also bringing full version of Office to the Windows Store.
Microsoft is aiming this at the education market. You will see variety of devices form all major manufactures including HP, Dell, Acer. The cheapest one starts at $189, and each machine will come with a free subscription to Minecraft: Education Edition.
